A note from Lewis Greer to fellow EM Summit participants: The link below will take you to a review of a book that I have not read, but the review itself is worth your time and thought. The subject is the culture of England (which directly affects at least John and Nigel from our group) rather than the culture of the U.S., but you will see that the reviewer links (accurately, I think, if not somewhat over-the-top) the two inextricably.
We did not spend much time talking about the problems in today's culture, perhaps assuming we all understand what those are, but the author of the book apparently gives voice to those in some ways I personally had not considered, ways which ring true. He seems to focus on moral decay, but he also touches on the virtues of prudence, thrift, industry, etc.
Here is one interesting quote from the review: Dalrymple [the author] does not seem to be a Christian, but he regrets British secularization and its attendant social evils: "The loss of the religious understanding of the human condition — that man is a fallen creature for whom virtue is necessary but never fully attainable — is a loss, not a gain, in true sophistication. The secular substitute — the belief in the perfection of life on earth by the endless extension of a choice of pleasures — is not merely callow by comparison but much less realistic in its understanding of human nature."
As we think about Entertainment, media, Christianity and culture, it seems to me that we cannot simply accept the culture as it is and work within it, we must change it every chance we get. (Isn't that what we all said?) If we can do that by inculcating or reviving the dormant ethics of Christianity in our every day lives, we will have done something important indeed.
